Atlanta Teachers Tips

Before ADD or ADHD

I am not one who believes in medication of behavior, however, I don’t express opposition of any decision decided upon by a parent. My only concerns are accuracy and the children. Children are often diagnosed as a result of their classroom performance academically and behaviorally. Here is a list of suggestions I propose a parent considers before accepting such diagnosis and medicating of a child:

1. Get your child checked for giftedness. Often a child’s mental capacity does not conform to the parameters within certain classrooms and therefore can cause discomfort and irritability in a child, which can lead to classroom disruptions and defiance.

2. Check to see if your child has become rebellious due to family situations or situations that may occur at school. Often children become defiant when they are not happy. As children, they often don’t know how to communicate their problems and thoughts to others, and result to violence or unwanted behaviors. Talk as often as you can with the child to come to a conclusion and hopefully a solution to his/her actions.

3. Visit the child’s classroom. Expressing concerns emotionally rather than physically may produce positive results.

4. Change your relationship with your child. Ask yourself what could be the problem and address every concern within yourself as a great start.

5. Consult with a counselor or family member if your child refuses to respond to you. Often the child may have a problem with something you may or may not be doing and is afraid to reveal it to you.

6. Get your child involved in energy draining activities, sports, or exercise on a daily basis. Studies show that some if not most children are sensitive to sugar. Now imagine just how much sugar children are getting today.  It goes without saying, high volumes of sugar can many anyone hyper and cause anyone crash.

7. Change the classroom environment in which you have your child enrolled. Other options include home schooling, private and non-profit organizations which over different teaching environments.

8. Learn more about your child. Every individual is different in his/her own special way.

9. Talk with others who have children who may or may not have been diagnosed.

10. In conclusion, get to the root of the problem.
